Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997

This information is provided to help you determine how the Act may apply to you. Questions related to your tax situation should be addressed directly to the IRS or your tax consultant or accountant. Information on the HOPE Scholarship and Lifetime Learning Credits can also be found in IRS Publication 970 available at http://www.irs.gov.

Hope Scholarship Credit:

Taxpayers may be eligible to claim a non-refundable credit against federal income taxes for EACH student in the taxpayer’s family enrolled at least half-time in one of the first two years of post-secondary education in a program leading to a degree, certificate, or other recognized educational credential.

Lifetime Learning Credit:

Taxpayers may be eligible to claim a non-refundable Lifetime Learning Credit against federal income tax for the qualified tuition and related expenses of the students in the taxpayer’s family who are enrolled in eligible education institutions.

Reporting Requirements:

A student's Social Security Number (SSN) is the key to reporting. To ensure that accurate and complete information is provided to the IRS, UC Davis Extension request that students provide his/her SSN at the time of enrollment. Each January UC Davis Extension reports student educational fee payment information to the IRS for students enrolled for the previous tax year. This report on prior year educational expenses is Form 1098T which should reach the prior year students by January 31st. If the data on the 1098T does not agree with your personal records contact the Student Services office at 800-752-0881 to request a review of the data reported. Please direct questions about your tax credit eligibility or filing options to the IRS or your tax advisor.
