Certificate Program in Laboratory Leadership and Management

Interactions among laboratory personnel can make or break a research team. Millions of dollars are wasted annually because of poor laboratory management. In addition, important discoveries and innovations are delayed. Laboratory scientists often have excellent technical skills, but have received little training in communication, innovation and laboratory management.

The UC Davis Laboratory Management Institute Certificate Program in Laboratory Leadership and Management is the first program of its kind providing comprehensive leadership and management training for laboratory scientists and administrators. The training is intended to help ensure job satisfaction and research innovation, productivity and quality, while enhancing the safety and well-being of research subjects and personnel. This highly interactive program allows participants to rehearse behavior that can be effective in dealing with difficult communication, management and ethical situations they may face in their laboratories.

Researchers devote years of study in their scientific disciplines, but typically have devoted little or no time into the research of the leadership and management skills, knowledge and insights that translate into successful operation of a scientific laboratory. As a consequence, many academic careers are stalled or ruined because of this lack of knowledge in leadership and management. This program concentrates on developing the knowledge, skills and abilities to run a laboratory efficiently and effectively. The Laboratory Management Institute Certificate Program in Laboratory Leadership and Management is designed for a range of employees in the field, from post doctoral students to new university faculty members, as well as others who have the primary responsibility for day-to-day or operational management of a scientific laboratory.

The Laboratory Management Institute Certificate Program in Laboratory Leadership and Management is comprised of five courses: Laboratory Leadership, Laboratory Management, Mentoring and Being Mentored, Laboratory Best Practices, and Laboratory Innovations: From Research Idea to Commercialization.

Successful candidates in the Laboratory Leadership and Management Certificate Program will be well prepared to manage a first laboratory, or improve their operational capabilities of an existing laboratory, either of which outcome will serve to advance their research and their careers both. Anyone who manages or expects to manage public- or private-sector research or service laboratories including principal investigators, postdoctoral scholars, research scientists, laboratory managers, and service laboratory managers, whether new in their career, mid-career, or seasoned professionals will benefit from this program.
