Certificate Program in Workplace Health and Safety
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a total of 4.3 million injuries and illnesses in private industry workplaces in 2004. In addition, fines from OSHA for noncompliance with workplace health and safety laws have increased in recent years, with the heaviest fines charged to those businesses that ignore the most basic regulations. If you are responsible for employee health and safety at your workplace, it may be time to expand your knowledge of current health and safety issues and regulations, and learn new skills to create and maintain a safer work environment.
How you will benefit
This program is designed to expand and improve the practical skills of those responsible for employee health and safety, and develop staff expertise in health and safety strategies. Health and Safety for Workers: Laws and Regulations

Administering health and safety programs requires up-to-the-minute, working knowledge of laws and regulations. Learn about the relevant laws and regulations pertaining to occupational health and safety, including Cal/OSHA and federal OSHA; criminal considerations, such as supervisors' and managers' responsibilities; workers' compensation jurisdiction, claims and benefits; the claims process and program administration; and legal liability.
Both simple and complex issues are illustrated by case
studies. Learn to use the Internet to research the most current
regulations during a computer lab session. This course is for
individuals who have interests in, or responsibilities for,
administering occupational health and safety programs. This is a

Industrial Hygiene

Gain an overview of occupational health hazards, including how they can be recognized, evaluated and controlled. Designed for those responsible for employee safety, this course discusses how industries are regulated and how to apply industrial hygiene principles in the workplace. Additionally, instructors focus on the topics most likely to confront safety managers today, such as indoor air quality, noise protection and mold. This course provides a basic understanding of industrial hygiene that will allow you to communicate safety principles to employees, perform some environmental evaluation and evaluate independent industrial hygiene consultants. Learn a best practices approach to reducing occupational exposures to bloodborne and airborne pathogens in a variety of industries including health care, dentistry, educational services and emergency response. CAMEO Hazardous Materials Software Training

Learn how to use Computer Aided Management of Emergency Operations (CAMEO) to assist in hazardous materials emergency response and planning. This tool includes three computer programs-the CAMEO database, the ALOHA air plume modeling program and the MARPLOT mapping program-that you will use to enhance your emergency planning and provide critical data in the event of a hazardous materials emergency.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Find information on a chemical within seconds.
- Plot where that chemical will travel over a map of your city.
- Store chemical and emergency information for chemical facilities in your area.
- Store information regarding sensitive populations.
- Plot the locations of all of these facilities.

Confined Space: An Overview

Confined spaces can be highly dangerous, and both federal and Cal/OSHA laws regulate their entry. By their nature, confined spaces contain a variety of problems: atmospheric hazards, the accumulation of toxic materials, flammable or explosive atmospheres, and physical hazards. This course focuses on hazard evaluation and reviews appropriate work practices under federal and state law. Construction Safety: An Overview

Gain an overview of the California Construction Safety Orders. Learn to locate and apply the Construction Safety Orders, identify common hazards found on construction sites, and develop abatement techniques for these hazards. Electrical Safety

Electricity has become essential to modern life. Because it is such a familiar part of our surroundings, it is often not treated with the respect it deserves. This course addresses electrical incidents and the variety of ways electricity becomes a hazard. Learn about the most frequent causes of electrical injuries including: contact with power lines; lack of ground-fault protection; path to ground missing or discontinuous; equipment not used in the manner prescribed; improper use of extension and flexible cords; and failure to lockout electrical circuits. Emergency Management Techniques

Gain practical experience solving emergency problems. Designed for emergency coordinators and response team directors, learn the management techniques common to all emergency situations, including natural disaster, fires, and mass medical and hazardous materials incidents. Discussions cover effective emergency planning, legal responsibilities, administrative notifications, government response plans and agencies, the incident commands system as an emergency management tool, crisis management skills, decision-making under pressure, effective communication techniques, and media and public relations. Ergonomics in the Workplace

Fall Protection for the Construction Industry

Construction is the most hazardous occupation in California and falls from elevations are the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry. The California Construction Safety Orders have many different requirements for fall protection for various trades and job functions, requiring different types of fall protection at different heights. In addition, there are numerous types of fall protection methods such as guardrails, fall arrest systems, fall restraint and safety nets and even more alternative methods to reduce fall hazards such as manlifts and scaffolds. This class is designed to unravel the mystery of fall protection safety orders and discuss types of fall protection and other methods to reduce fall hazards. This will allow you to know when fall protection is needed and how to protect employees from devastating falls. The discussion will go beyond what is required by safety orders and discuss best practices in fall protection. This course is an elective in the Workplace Health and Safety Certificate Program.

Fire and Life Safety Awareness

Discover the types of built-in fire protection features and fire and life safety hazards common to the educational and workplace environment. This course features "passive" versus "active" fire protection features, maintenance of exits, knowledge and use of fire extinguishers, impact to and from other occupants, human behavior before and during an emergency, proper storage techniques, and services potentially available through local fire departments. IIPP: Your Safety Management Action Plan

Learn how to create and maintain a successful Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP). Designed for administrators, managers and supervisors with responsibility for implementing and maintaining the IIPP in their organizations or work areas, this two-day course gives you the tools to develop or revise your written program and to use program evaluation tools to assess and monitor IIPP effectiveness. Scaffold Safety
