Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Program

Offered during winter and spring quarters (January-June), the super-intensive TEFL program helps participants develop knowledge and practical skills to teach English as a foreign language to students whose primary language is not English in countries outside of the U.S. This program combines practical classroom training and U.S. cultural study with experiential English language learning and teaching. It is designed especially for people who are studying to be or are already EFL teachers in their own countries and are interested in obtaining practical training in the U.S.

These classes build proficiency in the four critical skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), grammar and pronunciation.† Participants have daily access to our Multimedia Resource Center, a resource library and observation and discussion of ESL classes in a wide range of student communities. The TEFL component is based upon a reflective yet participatory model of teacher education and may include the following seminars:

  • Methodology, Proficiency and Approaches to Learning Styles
  • Teacher/Learner Roles and Relationships
  • Textbook/Materials Evaluation, Adaptation and Development
  • Correction Techniques
