International Commercial Law LL.M.

The International Commercial Law LL.M. program is designed to provide specialized knowledge in international business and trade with an emphasis on the U.S. legal system in a comparative context. The program and schedule enable legal practitioners who wish to expand their breadth and depth of knowledge to obtain a master's degree by attending 6 weeks of courses for three to five consecutive summers at the School of Law at University of California, Davis. This is a part-time degree program for foreign and domestic lawyers.

Classes are held during a 6-week period each summer. Course dates for the summer of 2008: July 13 - August 22.

Fees*

Application fee: $60 U.S. for domestic applicants. $80 U.S. for international applicants.
Academic tuition and fees: approximately $25,000 over a 3 year period.

Program of study

Candidates begin the International Commercial Law LL.M. by examining the fundamentals of the U.S. legal system with special emphasis on business and trade law. They complete the Orientation in U.S.A. Law program and all three of the specialized programs in international commercial law. In addition, participants take intensive courses with an international perspective designed specifically for the master's degree program. Topics for these courses include:

Participants are required to complete 36 quarter units of coursework and a rigorous research paper for an additional 4 units. 30 units must be UC Davis courses. Six units may be completed in another country with the approval of the ICL Director.

Requirements

Foreign applicants must present satisfactory evidence of the completion of legal academic training at an accredited educational institution. Domestic applicants must have completed at least six years of resident study at accredited colleges and law schools and must hold a professional degree from a law school approved by the American Bar Association.

All applicants whose primary language is not English are required to fulfill the English Language Requirement. There are three ways to meet this requirement:

  • Submit an Official TOEFL Score Report with a minimum iBT score of 79-80 (or 213 computer-based or 550 paper-based). Our institution code for the TOEFL is 4778.
  • Take the exam at the end of the initial Orientation in U.S.A. Law program and earn a "B" or better.
  • Attain the highest level in the 10-week Intensive English Program (March-June 2008) at UC Davis Extension prior to beginning the course work.

Application procedures and deadlines

The Admissions Committee will review applications as soon as they arrive. Students should apply by May 15, but applicants will be considered thereafter on a rolling basis.

The main components of the application should include:

  • Completed online application forms.
  • One official set of academic records issued in the original language and accompanied by a certified English translation. Academic records should show graded course work, dates of enrollment and award of degrees, plus a certified copy of the actual degree or state examination for all university and law school study.
  • Two letters of recommendation. It is preferred that these letters come from the applicant’s current or former employers, bar colleagues or law professors.
  • English Language Requirement form. If submitting a TOEFL score, please request the ETS to send the Official Score Report to Institution Code 4778.
  • Statement of Purpose: this statement should include the reasons why you are seeking a degree from the School of Law.
  • Personal summary: a brief personal history, with emphasis on the development of your interest in law.
  • CV or resume.
  • Non-refundable application fee of $60 for domestic applicants, or $80 for international applicants.

Checklist for submitting the online application

  1. The online application is available at: http://apply.embark.com/grad/ucdavis/. You will create a new user account. Select the application for International Commercial Law.
  2. You may pay the application fee with Visa or MasterCard through the secure online system. You may also pay via e-check. If you are not able to pay online, please send a bank draft directly to the ICL LL.M. Admissions Officer. The fee must be paid before the application will be considered complete.
  3. Please upload your CV or resume via the online application Web site. There will be a space for you to also submit the statement of purpose and personal summary.
  4. Two letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically through the online application system. Please do not send hard copies. You will be asked to provide the email address for each referee. Referees will then receive instructions to submit the recommendations online.
  5. All transcripts, translations, TOEFL scores and any other materials not submitted online should be sent DIRECTLY to the ICL LL.M. Admissions Officer at: School of Law, UC Davis Extension Building, 1333 Research Park Drive, Davis CA 95618-4852, U.S.A.
  6. If your transcript shows a name different from that on your application, indicate BOTH names clearly on the application.
